Nearly 200 guests gathered at New York City's Colony Club for the first Steps for Breath V kickoff luncheon, raising $50,000 to benefit lung cancer research at MSKCC.

This Sunday, on Pond Lane in front of the Cultural Center in Southampton, the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center hosts its fifth anniversary of the “3 mile fun run/walk” they call Steps For Breath. People of all ages participate to raise funds for lung cancer research at MSKCC.

Steps for Breath was founded in 200 as the first event of its kind to raise both awareness of the disease and much needed funds for research. Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of both men and women in this country – more victims annually than breast, prostate, and colon cancers combined. Yet funding for its research lags dramatically behind that of other cancers. Since its founding, Steps for Breath has contributed more than $1.2 millioni to the study of lung cancer at MSKCC. This happens to be the largest amount of money specifically raised for lung cancer EVER in this country, according to Mark G. Kris, chief of MSKCC’s Thoracic Service.

Paul Alexander is a former reporter for Time. He’s written for many magazines and periodicals including the New York Times Magazine, New York, The Village Voice, the Guardian, and Rolling Stone. He wrote Man of the People: the Life of John McCain as well as biographies of Sylvia Plath, J.D. Salinger and James Dean. Until recently he was the co-host of Bachelor & Alexander, a nationally syndicated talk show on ABC Radio Network.

Carmen White, Patricia Duff, and Stuart White
Two years ago Mr. Alexander, who has directed a recently released documentary with Iris Rossi on John Kerry’s Vietnam years titled Brothers in Arms, predicted in a piece in Rolling Stone that Senator Kerry would be the Democratic candidate for the Presidency this year. Since then he’s been following the campaign from the privileged position on the inside. He’s just published a book about it: The Candidate; Behind John Kerry’s Remarkable Run for the White House.

His friends Carmen and Stuart White gave a book party to celebrate its publication. There were about fifty guests including Chris Heinz, Peggy Kerry, Ms. Rossi, Patricia Duff, Billy White, Joan Ullman, Jason Grant, Judy Freed, Todd Jacobs and Brian Hathaway.
