The last three days of August and the first two of September, Save Venice held its annual five-day gala in Venice with more than two hundred supporters enjoying the festivities. Beatrice Santo Domingo chaired this year’s gala and Francesca Bortolotto was International Chairman.

On a Sunday, guests picked up their gala packets and their treasure hunts in the lobby of the Bauer Hotel. This year’s hunt was created by Michael LaPlaca and underwritten by The Arthur Loeb Foundation. The quest kept participants busy throughout the week. That evening cocktails were held at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection hosted by Director Philip Rylands and given by Save Venice board member Elizabeth Locke and her husband John Staelin. Young Friends of Venice enjoyed a pasta dinner at the home of Toto Bergamo in honor of the new President of Save Venice Beatrice Rossi-Landi.

Afterwards there was a luncheon given by Laurel and Walter Karabian of the California Chapter of Save Venice at the San Lazzaro monastery on the Island of the Armenians. On Thursday there were two lectures at the Granai. Professor Rosella Zorzi spoke on American Expatriates in 19th Century Venice and Sonia Evers spoke on Venetian Art in the Nineteenth Century: from Scandal to Scandal. Cipriani prepared three simultaneous buffet luncheons in their gardens. This was given by Shirley and Jim Sherwood – he a Save Venice board member. It was during the lunch that the names of those who had completed the Treasure Hunt were put in a bowl and the winners were drawn by Regina Resnik and Marco Croze. Guy Robinson won first prize, Bob Lovejoy the second, and third went to Sandra Ourosoff. Missiaglia, the famous jeweler on Piazza San Marco and its owners, the Croze family has been generously contributing the prizes for eight successive galas. This year’s prizes were jeweled phoenixes, symbols of the reborn Teatro La Fenice.

On Thursday evening, there were cocktails and a tour at Ca’Pesaro, Venice’s museum of modern art. Then came a candle-lit dinner and dancing to the Jazz Band of the Fenice Orchestra at Palazzo Pisani Moretta. Board member Sidney Stires played the piano. Giampaolo Seguso of Seguso Viro on Murano once again generously contributed beautiful Murano glass party favors and the gala was concluded until everyone meets again in Venice for Carnevale in 2006.
