The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation’s Annual Gala, the largest lupus fund-raising event in the country, set a record this year with $2 million raised for lupus research and patient services. Nearly 800 guests, including the Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg, attended the event on November 22nd at the New York Marriott Marquis.

The Gala honored Susan Golick, Founder of S.L.E. Lupus Foundation. Susan Golick, diagnosed with lupus in 1970, was one of the earliest champions for the lupus cause, when lupus was a little known, often misdiagnosed disease. Susan, along with her parents, Morrie Golick and Dorothy Newman, gathered a handful of people together in 1971, with the goal of establishing awareness of lupus, supporting research and creating resources for patients.

“I’m proud of what my family and I started. It is the strength of all of us working together that has enabled the Foundation to carry out its mission. It is so gratifying to think about how much we have raised for research, but we must keep going. Life without lupus – that’s what we’re striving for,” Susan said.

The NYU Child Study Center raised a record $3.4 million at the Seventh Annual Child Advocacy Award Dinner held at Cipriani 42nd Street. This year's dinner, "Changing the Face of Child Mental Health," was chaired by Linda and Arthur Carter and honored The Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg, for his dedication to philanthropy and civic affairs relating to children and public health.

"We've got to do things for our children who don't reach out and ask for help themselves," said Mayor Mike. "The Child Study Center is working to make sure all children get the opportunity to participate in the great American dream."

ParentCorps, a Child Study parenting program aimed at promoting social and academic competence and preventing conduct problems in preschoolers was highlighted in a special reading by Uma Thurman. The presentation focused on one family who has benefited from the ParentCorps program. "Having a child with a mental or psychiatric disorder is the last stigma. We can say the word 'cancer' out loud, we can discuss seizures, but too many of us shy away when the topic comes to child psychiatric disorders like depression," said Harold S. Koplewicz, M.D., Director of the NYU Child Study Center.

Guests at the Dinner included Arthur Altschul, The Honorable Alfonse D'Amato; Cyndi Lauper; Andre Balaz; Erica Jong, as well as NYU Child Study Center Board members Brooke and Daniel Neidich; Alice Tisch; The Honorable Jon S. Corzine; Linda and Arthur Carter, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff, and Claude Wasserstein.

The Annual Child Advocacy Award Dinner celebrates the NYU Child Study Center's commitment to its mission: to apply the best of modern science and medicine to the problem of mental illness in children. The Dinner is the primary fundraising event for the NYU Child Study Center; all proceeds support the programs and initiatives of the Center. Past honorees include: Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Rudolph Giuliani, Tipper Gore, Governor George E. Pataki, Whoopi Goldberg, Senator Jon S. Corzine and Joanne Corzine, David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D and Leonard N. Stern.
