Scalamandré sponsored a unique event to raise much needed funds for the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, calling on 35 generous designers to each dress a slipper chair using fabrics and trimmings from their gorgeous inventory. A slipper chair, for the few of you who might not know, is armless and low to the floor, making it easy to put on and remove your slippers. The chairs were then auctioned off silently and to benefit The Society. They called it “A Chair To Remember” and here are some of the designers who participated: Joanne de Guardiola, Bunny Williams, Albert Hadley, Lisa Jackson , David Easton, Juan Pablo Molyneux, Greg Jordan, Geoffrey Bradfield, David Kleinberg, Charlotte Moss, Todd Romano, Jamie Drake, Alexa Hampton, Juan Montoya , Tony Ingrao, Zang Toi, Samuel Botero, Eric Cohler, Thomas Jayne, Randall Ridless, Christopher Coleman, Amanda Nisbet, Elissa Cullman, Michael Simon, Matthew Patrick Smyth, Kelly Graham, Ruth Knitzer, Robert Couturier, William Diamond and Anthony Baratta, T. Keller Donovan, Jeff Lincoln, Marshall Watson, Gilles Mendel, Amanda Nisbet, Elisabeth Martell, Salisbury & Manus, Scott Salvator, Sills/Huniford, and Michael Simon.

The Slipper Chairs

The unveiling of the chairs, co-hosted by the fabric house’s Mark and Wiggie Bitter and Town & Country’s Pamela Fiori, wearing a jacket by Lee Anderson, was held in the new Scalamandré showroom, which has become one of the best places in town for interior design related events.
The space on East 59th Street, created by Gensler Architects and interior designer, Jeff Lincoln, with John Boone furniture accessories, occupies 10,000 square feet on three levels.

Three hundred and fifty guests, including Arie and Coco Kopelman, Helena Lehane, Mario Buatta, Anne Grauso, Jason Bell, Stephanie Griswold, Ed Goodman, Alexia Hamm Ryan, Roy and Mallory Kean, Alexis Waller, Eddie Lee, Mary Darling, Miguel Florres-Vianna, Chessie Breen, Holly Cunningham, Adriana, Edward and Bob Bitter, Christina Smith, Karen Glover, Leona Blechinger, Veronica Hinman, Marilyn White and Paulette Smyth, enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and chocolate martinis by caterer Susan Simon and chocolate and red themed flowers by Craig Kiely.

Best of all, the event raised almost $40,000 to help SMSKCC continue their excellent work in supporting The Center’s fight against cancer, while continuing to help those who suffer from it.

Mr. Henri Barguirdjian and Mr. Craig Miller of Graff Jewels hosted a cocktail reception at their Worth Avenue store in Palm Beach in honor of the Norton Museum of Art's Bal des Arts 2005: A Voyage to Valencia, which will take place at the Museum on Saturday, February 5, 2005.

Anne and Harold Smith

Graff is Grand Jewelry Sponsor of the Bal des Arts. The guest list included Bal des Arts chairman Sandy Krakoff and her husband Robert, Anne and Harold Smith, Kenn Karakul, Andrea Stark, Phyllis Krock, Ellen and Bob Jaffe, Don and Nancy Carter, Petra and Stephen Levin, and the Honorable Mark Foley among others. Graff's signature designs were modeled for guests — a suite of signature yellow and white diamonds and a mixed-stone lariat necklace along with 34 Ct. and 22 Ct. rings.

The Bal des Arts 2005 theme is inspired by the spectacular special exhibition, Spain in the Age of Exploration 1492-1819, featuring masterpieces from the collections of the Patrimonio Nacional of Spain, which will be on view at the Norton Museum from February 2 through May 1, 2005. The Norton is the only East Coast venue for this historic exhibition of 130 objects, many leaving Spain for the first time, including masterworks by such artists as Bosch, Titian, El Greco, Velázquez and Goya, among others. Also included are sculptures, such as Bernini's great Crucifix from the Escorial, decorative arts, armor, tapestries, scientific instruments, early maps, manuscripts and books, including a rare 1494 edition of Columbus's first report of his voyage to America.

Bal des Arts 2005 ticket levels range from $6,000-$25,000. Please call (561) 227-1250 for additional information. The Bal des Arts will benefit the Museum's exhibitions and education programs.
