Last Thursday night there was a cocktail party for the American Ballet Theatre hosted by Malo, the worldwide leader in luxury cashmere knitwear at their boutique on Madison Avenue. The party celebrated Malo’s partnership with ABT as a Principal Sponsor of the dance company’s 2005 Fall Season which runs at City Center from October 19th through November 6th.

The chairs for the opening night gala are Muffie Potter Aston and Dr. Sherrell Aston, Grace Hightower De Niro and Robert De Niro, Arlene and Harvey Blau and the Junior Council of the ABT. The New York Philharmonic opened its 164th season with a baton

Last Wednesday night the New York Philharmonic opened its 164th season under the baton of Maestro Loren Maazel, who led the superb members of the this superb orchestra to wild applause at Lincoln Center. The brilliant Moscow-born pianist Evgeny Kissin performed “Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto No. 5,” followed by Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem “Don Juan” and “Der Rosenkavalier.” Kissen, who began playing the piano by ear at age two, has performed at such diverse musical events as the Grammy Awards in 1992 and the BBC Promenade Concerts.

Chairpersons for the evening were the following: J. Christopher Flowers and Mary H. White; Robert S., Jr. and Colleen Hekemian; and Masamoto and Yoko Yashiro.

There were more than one thousand guests, including CeCe Cord, Elaine Sargent with Gray Beverly, Evelyn and Leonard Lauder, art consultant Michel Witmer and society band leader Alex Donner, Marie-Josee and Henry Kravis, Dr. Leon and Paula Root, and Karen and Richard LeFrak, she in Oscar de la Renta, Joanne and Roberto de Guardiola, Pamela Fiori, Jesse and Rand Araskog, and Peter Gregory, who moved into the tent after the performance and dined on Crabmeat Timbale, Medallions of Veal and Chilled Passion Fruit Soufflé under the autumnal golden-amber glow created by lighting guru Bentley Meeker in a tent festooning with towering arrangements of crab apple branches, bronze amaranths, and green Hypericum berries.

The gala raised more than $3.1 million making it the most successful night in the orchestra’s history. That’s a lot of money no matter what year it is.
