Alzheimer's Association Rita Hayworth Gala.

Last Tuesday night, they held the Alzheimer’s
Associations annual Rita Hayworth Gala in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf. This
is the eighteenth year for this gala which is held in New York and
Chicago, always hosted by Hayworth’s daughter by Prince
Aly Khan, Princess Yasmin Khan, and has raised more than $40 million.
This year’s theme was “Meet me at the Stork Club,” a
reference to the heyday of the great nightclub (which was located
at 3 East 53rd Street where Paley Park now sits). The Stork was a
nightly gathering place for celebrities, authors, politicians, columnists
and socialities – all under the same roof, drinking and dancing.
This year’s gala honored Dennis Basso and Robert
Nennosche, and featured a special performance by Natalie
Cole. Gala Chair was Somers Farkas. The
evening was underwritten by Rolex Watch USA (all money raised goes
directly to the Alzheimer’s Assocation). Muffie Potter
Aston was Sponsor Chair. Auction co-chairs were Claudia
Cohen, Susan Hess, and Donna Dixon Aykroyd.
Princess Yasmin Khan (Yazzie to her friends) draws a loyal crowd who all put
their best foot forward year after year for this party and as a result it’s
always a big bright, glamorous success. Among the guests this year were Marty
and Cornelia Bregman, Deborah Norville, Phyllis George, Muffie and Dr. Sherrell
Aston, Claudia Cohen, Larry and Michele Herbert, John and Margo Catsimatidis,
Allen and Debbie Grubman, John and Andrea Stark, Anne Hearst, Nurit Kahane Haase, and John
and Susan Hess.

The Madison Avenue Business Improvement District (BID)
was the event's sponsor and organizer. In the spirit of sharing strength
and hope,
the “Pink Ribbon Stories” booklet spotlighted survivor
stories provided by special clients and staff submitted by participating
retailers, as well as resource and contact information from the benefiting
charities. The booklet was complementary to shoppers on Madison Avenue
at participating businesses from 57th to 86th Streets.
In addition there was a luncheon honoring the Pink Ribbon "story
writers" who shared their breast cancer survivor stories. Attending
the luncheon were the directors of the three hospital programs: Myra
Biblowit of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation; Dr.
Clifford Hudis of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer
Center; and Andrea
Geduld of Mount
Sinai Breast Health Resource Program, who benefited from the two-week
event and participating Madison Avenue BID retailers. Over the a
past 6 years, over $190,000 has been raised to benefit the three
hospital programs. |
