A
couple of weeks ago over at Cipriani 42nd Street, NYU’s
Tisch School of the Arts and the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television
honored three of their most distinguished NYU graduates – Martin
Scorsese who received the Big Apple Award for Lifetime Achievement;
Jane Rosenthal who received her award for film Production and Commitment
to New York City through her co-founding Tribeca Productions and
the Tribeca Film Festival, and director Spike Lee for innovation,
Leadership and unwavering commitment to the education of young
film makers. Jonathan Tisch presented Rosenthal with her award.
Monty Ross presented the award to Spike Lee, and
in the spirit of the evening, Martin Scorsese received his award,
at his personal
request, from his former student, Spike Lee.
Big wonderful
evening, full of good feelings and amazing achievement. They raised
$1.1 million for the school’s student scholarships. Robert De Niro,
Maurice
Kanbar, Ann and Andrew Tisch, Jamie and Steve Tisch, and Sir
Howard Stringer were
the evening’s co-chairs. The theme of the night was “On Location,” referring
to the highlighting of the honorees’ student years through film clips and
original musical tributes performed by twenty-four of the schools talented musical
theatre performance students, members of NYU’s CAP21 Conservatory. A few
years ago I was invited to a special performance of the school’s students
of acting and musical theatre and was blown away by the talent that’s being
developed by the Tisch School.

Campbell Jr., President of
Cooper Union, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Harvey Keitel, Alec Baldwin, Chevy
Chase,

school including Pulitzer Prize winners Tony Kushner, Doug
Wright, and Chang Lee; Academy Award

Stone. There are Tony Award winners too: Billy Crystal, Rachel

The
Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted its second annual Young Friends
Benefit Dance two
Thursdays ago.
The evening’s theme was The Grand Tour, and the sold-out event
included cocktails, dessert, and dancing next to a backdrop of Grand
Tour-inspired quotes and images from the Met’s collection.
The kicker might have been how many knew just exactly what “The
Grand Tour” was. The concept began in 18th century England
where the aristocracy traveled abroad to cultural sites (mainly Rome)
in search of what today would be called an “art education.” And
from these excursions emerged poets, painters, novelists, not to
mention affairs of the heart, sometimes marriage and a raised consciousness.
The Grand Tour was a fashionable pasttime and pasttime it was for
those who already had the money to pass the time.
Anyway, the Met’s Grand Tour benefit was a big success and
brought out a small army of emerging Bright Young Things from the
concrete, glass and steel canyons of Manhattan. Benefit Chairmen
were Chandler Bass, Zani Gugelmann, Stephanie Field Harris,
Alejandro Santo Domingo and Eugenia Silva, and Honorary
Chairs were Jill Swid
and Eric Rosen. Benefit sponsors were Escada,
Harry Winston, and Sotheby’s. |
