Arabian Nights in New York

On Friday February 3, 2006, The Lycée Français de New York held a Gala fund-raising evening themed "1001 Nights" At Cipriani 42nd Street. The décor recreated the Arabian atmosphere and costumed student from the Lycee welcomed the guests. During cocktails and hors d'oeuvres the audience bid on items in the silent auction. After dinner with a special appetizer by Daniel Boulud, Simon de Pury conducted a live auction. The Charles de Ferry de Fontnouvelle Award, which recognizes distinguished service to the French-American, was presented to Michel Pebereau, Chairman of BNP Paribas. After the award presentation, there was a performance by belly dancers and a whirling dervish. The event lasted into the night with a mix of Middle Eastern and occidental music.

Two Wednesday’s ago, Susan Schulz, Editor-in-Chief of CosmoGIRL!, along with Kimberly and Ruby Stewart, hosted its 2nd annual fashion week party at Stereo over on West 29th Street, honoring the fashion photographers who worked with the magazine over the past year.

CosmoGIRL!, if you didn’t know, and I didn’t (why would I?) is the number one teen magazine on the newsstand. Every month seven and a half million young women every month pick it up. They pride themselves on showing their audience what a teenage girl would or should want to look like. "Part of feeling confident about yourself is showing your sense of style. CosmoGIRL!'s readers want the latest, hottest stuff but they all want to put their unique twist on a look so that they don't look like everyone else," Schulz says. In other words, they want to look like everyone else but they don’t’ want to look like everyone else. Which is a little like being in two places at one time. Well, why not?

Anyway, the only place to be last Wednesday night, for some people anyway, was Stereo and the CosmoGIRL! Party.
