Sir Sean and Lady Connery, and the Right Honorable Jack McConnell, The First Minister of Scotland, presided over a distinguished group of Honorary Chairmen, Friends of Scotland for a Scottish evening of fashion and fun, Dressed to Kilt, celebrating Scotland’s leaders and legends.
The Event Chair was Dr. Geoffrey Scott Carroll; Vice-chair, Scotland, Tessa Hartmann; Vice-chair, Los Angeles, Peter Morris; and Vice-chair, New York, Susan Shin.
The evening, held last week at the Synod Hall, St John the Divine Cathedral Garden at West 110 Street featured cocktails and live entertainment, a fashion show and Vivien Westwood who was honored for her contributions to Tartan and Scottish fashions. And then the fun began.

Humorist and author Roy Blount Jr. hosted a gala fundraising dinner in celebration of writers and writing to benefit the Authors Guild Foundation at the Metropolitan Club in New York City. Ruében Martínez, founder of Librería Martínez Book & Art Galleries, received the Authors Guild Award for Distinguished Service at the dinner. Winner of MacArthur prize and recently named one of Inc.com’s “26 most fascinating entrepreneurs,” Ruében Martínez has made it his mission to start up 25 bookstores in poor Latino neighborhoods around the country by 2012. Pulitzer prize-winning author Oscar Hijuelos presented the award to Mr. Martínez.
Co-chairs of the evening were authors Sallie Bingham, Judy Blume, Sandra Brown, Mary Higgins Clark, Michael Crichton, James Gleick, Barbara Goldsmith, A.E. Hotchner, Garrison Keillor, Joanne Leedom-Ackerman, Katherine Neville, John MacArthur, Mary Pope Osborne, Randall Rothenberg, R.L. Stine, Scott Turow, and Stuart Woods.
Among those attending: Mitch Albom, Ken Auletta, Lawrence Block, Gail Lumet Buckley, Kevin Buckley, Michael Cunningham, Lynn Goldberg, Erica Jong, Robert Moskin, Susan Isaacs, Larry Kirshbaum, Victor Navasky, Sidney Offit, Katherine Neville, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Jean Strouse, Nan Talese, Nick Taylor, Lily Tuck, Amanda Urban, Bob Wietrak.
All profits from the event go to support the Authors Guild Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting writing as a livelihood and promoting the importance of writing, publishing, free speech and copyright.
