Last week Cabana Cachaça celebrated its U.S. launch with an evening of cocktails in the garden at newly-reopened 10 Little West 12th.
Guests mingled in the ivy-lined courtyard to a soundtrack of samba-inspired Brazilian beats, among them Damon Dash and Rachel Roy, Amanda Hearst, Andrew Saffir and Daniel Benedict, Anouck Lepere, Genevieve Jones, Perez Hilton, Richie Rich and Traver Rains, Derek Blasberg, Annelise Peterson, Tracy Stern, and Douglas Friedman. Among the Brazilian guests toasting their country’s World Cup victory over Ghana earlier that day (although Brazil was eventually upset by France who is playing Italy for the whole megillah on Sunday) was Sao Paulo-born Luigi Tadini.

DIVAS Shop for Opera (well of course they do) is an extraordinary event that benefits the New York City Opera’s costume department. It was held this year at Industria Superstudios. Patricia Field, who needs no introduction (Costume Designer for “Sex and the City,” and “The Devil Wears Prada” among many other productions) co-chaired with Princess Alexandra of Greece, and Anne Slowey, the fashion news director of Elle.
And what’d they shop for? Stuff that came through estate and corporate donations and individual items (apparel and accessories) from Manolo (of course), Bill Blass, Burberry, Celine, Chanel, Versace, Yves St. Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Dior, Gucci, Nicole Miller, Nanette Lepore, Hermes, John Hardy, Carolina (what you do you mean, Carolina Who?), Sylvia Heisel (who? just kidding); Marc Jacobs, Betsey Johnson, Donna (you know, Donna ...), Michael Kors, Emma Cook, Helmut Lang, Christian LaCroix, Judith Leiber, Thierry, Zac, Diane, Mr. Vuitton, YSL (oh, I mentioned him already), and on and on and on. Compulsive shoppers went directly from there to their shrinks and their 12 Step programs (sending everything home with their drivers natch). It was that kind of a night. They raised $55,000, so you can see there were real bargains, so cheap you didn’t even need a credit card.

Tuesday, a week ago, they held the last Junior Council party of the season on the Arthur Ross Terrace at the American Museum of Natural History on 77th Street and Central Park West. Guests got to celebrate spring with a private viewing of “Lizards and Snakes: Alive!” Guests got up close and personal with geckos, turtles while keeping their cautious distance from other live reptiles from across the world while Dr. Darrel Frost, the Association Dean of Science for Collections, also Curator of the Department of Herpetology, Division of Vertebrate Zoology, and also curator of “Lizards” et al, gave a short presentation. After that it was cocktails on the Arthur Ross Terrace with music by a jazz band.
The Junior Council of the AMNH is a membership group of young philanthropically-minded New Yorkers ranging in age from 22 to 39. Its members participate in specially arranged events that offer an intimate view of the Museum's collections, activities, exhibitions, and fields of study. There are a lot of members who were first introduced to the thrill and wonder of the museum’s collections way back when they were so high.
The Junior Council membership is a progressive step for them. But for everyone, the Council’s events provide a stimulating mix of science, education, and revelry for its members. It gives young professionals an opportunity to get behind-the-scenes at one of the world's greatest museums, and meet and mingle with some of our nation's most distinguished and engaging scientists, Museum Trustees, and friends, as well as meeting and making new acquaintances and contacts.
Junior Council members attend four events throughout the year, including exhibition previews, private screenings, lectures, and discussions. Then they cap it all off with a beautiful summer evening in New York, one of those moments when New York explains its eternal allure to youth of all ages.
