Dancing up a storm at Casita Maria's annual "Fiesta."

Casita Maria, New York’s oldest settlement house serving the Hispanic communities of the South Bronx and East Harlem, held its annual black tie Fiesta dinner dance and fund-raiser at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City.

The evening’s highlight was the presentation of the prestigious Casita Maria Gold Medal of Honor, bestowed annually upon three individuals who have made outstanding humanitarian, philanthropic and cultural contributions to the community at large and to the Hispanic community in particular.

This year’s honorees were Aileen Mehle, aka Suzy, famed writer and columnist and wonderful friend to Casita Maria for many years, William R. Rhodes, Chairman, President and CEO of Citibank, N.A. and Senior Vice Chairman of Citigroup and Eduardo Sánchez Pérez, Director Adjunto of Hola Magazine.

Fiesta 2006 Co-Chairmen, Jackie Weld Drake, Carolina Herrera and H.R.H. Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia hosted the very dazzling and successful evening. Mario Buatta along with NBC 4’s Monica Morales were Masters of Ceremonies.

The evening began with Cocktails at 7:30 PM followed by the brief awards presentation, then dinner and dancing to The Bob Hardwick Sound at 8:30 PM.

Fiesta also featured a luxurious and unique silent auction headed up by Junior Co-Chairs Mati Bonnetti Buccini and Graciela Dauhajre.

A couple of weeks ago the Skin Cancer Foundation announced that more than a $1 million was raised during their annual Skin Sense Award. Gala Celebrities Christie Brinkley, Bernadette Peters, Meryl Streep, Joel Grey, Juliana Margulies, and Tony Sirico were in attendance to help support the Foundation and its important mission. As the evening’s host, writer and director Nora Ephron kept the audience stitches (no pun intended).

The Skin Sense Award Gala honors those who have played a pivotal role in educating the public about the importance of sun protection at a time when skin cancer is increasing at epidemic rates. This year’s event honored Sarah Brown, Beauty Director, Vogue and Neil Fiske, CEO, Bath & Body Works.

The gala brought together foremost dermatologists and more than 500 leaders in the beauty, cosmetic, fragrance, skin care, fashion, retail, and publishing industries who are committed to the Foundation’s mission of increasing public and professional awareness about the prevention, detection, and treatment of skin cancer. All proceeds from the gala will fund The Skin Cancer Foundation’s national public education campaign focusing on prevention and early detection of skin cancer.

The Skin Cancer Foundation is the only global organization solely devoted to the prevention, detection and treatment of skin cancer. The mission of the Foundation is to decrease skin cancer incidence and mortality by means of public and professional education, medical training and research. For more information about melanoma and to learn more about how to protect your skin, visit www.skincancer.org, or call 1-800-SKIN-490.

"Desperate Housewives" actress Nicollette Sheridan and "Exorcist" head-turner Linda Blair were supposed to eat dog food during an event promoting "Dine With Your Dog Day."

"This is not `Fear Factor,'" Sheridan said, balking at the idea of downing dog food.

Blair also declined, explaining she's a vegetarian. (Otherwise she wudda?) But "Little House on the Prairie" actress Melissa Gilbert and Ross the Intern from Jay Leno's "Tonight" show were game and scooped up helpings of doggie morsels. (Are you making a face at the thought of it?).

Actors Annabeth Gish, Joan Van Ark, Robert Culp, Cindy Lu, Talia Botone, Sadie Tanner Rose and James Farantino were also on hand for the midday kickoff celebration dubbed the "doggy social event of the season." Did they eat the dog food? I actually sometimes wonder how my dogs do it (so I give them a lot of people food to make up for my guilt).

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
and governors of New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Nebraska and West Virginia had proclaimed Oct. 21 as "Dine With Your Dog Day." But the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza decided to unleash the party two days early.

Acid-tongued fashion critic Mr. Blackwell was on hand to applaud the best-dressed bow-wow and a pet psychic read paws. And he’s seen some real dogs in his life; just ask him.

Former "Eight is Enough" TV patriarch Dick Van Patten, whose Natural Balance dog food company was behind the event, said he wanted to show dog lovers how delicious pet chow can be. OK, Dick’s a sensible, practical guy, so must be it’s OK.

The gathering celebrates the bond between man and dog by encouraging pet owners to share a meal with their dog, Van Patten said.

That following Saturday pet stores nationwide hosted special events to honor dogs big and small. They were honored for putting up with us and our crazy ways (and diets). Some sales proceeds from participating brands, including Natural Balance, went to animal shelters, Van Patten said, although more, much more is needed.

"We raised a lot of money for local animal shelters to continue their important efforts to give humane treatment to man's best friend," Van Patten said in a statement. Humane treatment, however, starts in the heart and the home. Don’t forget.
