Friendship on NYSD ...

Fifteen years ago, Friends In Deed was founded because the twin epidemics of AIDS and cancer were raging, doctors just didn’t have time for the emotional needs of their patients and so there was an urgent need.

Their premise is simple: no one should be ill without strong, loving, emotional, and spiritual support.

Today, they are the crisis center for anyone with a diagnosis of HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening physical illnesses ... the caregivers, and family and friends of those who are ill ... and all those dealing with grief.

Among the services offered are support groups, one-on-one crisis counseling, bodywork, nutritional counseling, and outreach services to our clients who are homebound or hospitalized.

They also run life-saving HIV prevention workshops for at-risk teens in New York City public schools, having already reached over 70,000 students.

Last month at Balthazar Friends in Deed held their fall benefit dinner and recognized the philanthropic contributions of Elie and Rory Tahari.

The dinner was co-hosted by Anderson Cooper, Mike Nichols, Hamilton South and Cynthia O’Neal. Guests included Lauren Bacall, Lee Radziwill, Jessica Seinfeld, David and Sybil Yurman, Diane Von Furstenberg and Barry Diller, Lauren and Richard Dupont, Mario Cantone, Olivia Chantecaille, Cindi Leive, Susy Korb, Amy Gross, Anthony Rapp, Aby Rosen and Samantha Boardman, and Nan Bush and Bruce Weber.

The New York Design Center and House Beautiful Magazine held its Masquerade Ball the week before Halloween. The Alpha Workshops transformed the New York Design Center into a masked extravaganza, as the NYDC continues to celebrate its 80th anniversary. Guests dressed as their favorite design icon from the past 80 years from Audrey Hepburn and Austin Powers to the Saarinen table and Eames chair.

The New York Design Center, the country’s oldest furniture and design center, is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.  Built in 1926 as the New York Furniture Exchange the NYDC was the dream of few visionaries in the furniture industry.

The Alpha Workshops is the only not-for-profit organization in the country that trains people living with HIV/AIDS for work in the field of decorative arts. Alpha has developed a unique curriculum and created a flexible and supportive workplace that is responsive to the medical and emotional needs of those living with a chronic illness. Alpha is also an award-winning design studio, competing at the highest level of the industry for artisanal work, which allows it to hire graduating artists and to generate earned income to support its programs. Because Alpha hires the people it trains, fulfilling the mission depends directly on the growth of its design business.  For more information call (212) 594-7320 or visit www.alphaworkshops.org

Founded in 1896, House Beautiful is the oldest continuously published shelter magazine in the United States and is regarded as one of the country's premier home publications.

Amy Sacco, restaurateur and queen of the New York nightlife, creator of New York hot spots Lot 61, Bungalow 8, and recently opened restaurant, Bette, has now become an author with publication of her first book, Cocktails (ASSOULINE).  Doncha remember your English teacher always said if you wanna be a writer, write about something you know?  Considering her repertoire of creations, we’d guess this may only be the first of many Sacco volumes.

The Miami launch of Amy Sacco’s Cocktails kicked off Epic Miami’s exclusive event series “Epic Thursdays” at the ultra-chic sales center on October 19th. This waterfront landmark along the Miami River and Biscayne Bay is being developed by Ugo Colombo, Alfredo and Diego Lowenstein, and Amanico Ortega.

Guests enjoyed a night of hors d’oeuvres and signature cocktails featured in Amy Sacco’s book. The event was sponsored by Roberto Cavalli Vodka, Frida Kahlo Tequila and Veuve Clicquot Champagne. A good time was had by all. Buy the book and see for yourself.

Among those in attendance were the designers of the couture label Marchesa, Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman, Lydia and Rudy Prio-Touzet, Nicola Siervo, Reynaldo “Bibs” Bibolini, Karla Dascal, Norma Quintero, Stephanie Sayfie, William Pizzorni, Elizabeth Beracasa and Martin Elortegui.

Frances Hayward welcomed animal lovers to Christie’s to meet the new President of the Humane Society of the United States Wayne Pacelle. As the founder of the BeKind Organization, Hayward is a huge animal advocate who has been involved with the HSUS for years.

The two had recently joined forces, along with Hayward’s beloved rescued Shepherd Amigo, and appeared in a national Public Service Announcement to help raise awareness about inhumane trapping of animals.

After an hour of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, while everyone enjoyed the amazing art that filled the room on the second floor, the Chairman of Christie’s Stephen Lash, HSUS Board Member William Mancuso, along with Hayward and Pacelle, thanked everyone for coming and discussed what they hope to achieve on behalf of the organization.

Guests including Kip Forbes, Frances Scaife, Kathy and Billy Rayner and famed artist Peter Max and his wife Mary mingled and admired Christie’s Fall Collection of modern and impressionist art. Those supporting Hayward and her cause included Judy and Edward Ney, Myrna Haft, 8 Union Square South developer A.A. Lari, Jon L. Heinemann and Michelle Marie, whose “Winter Trees on Oak Paneled Boxes” exhibition opens at the Hotel Carl Gustaf in St. Barth’s on November 1. There were a slew of doctors in the house including Dr. Peter Theodorou, Dr. Eric Berger, Dr. John Kennedy and Dr. Christopher Hodgkins.

During the fete, Hayward gave guests her BeKind Bracelets and CauseCollars, which have helped raise funds for animals in need at their web site www.bekind.org. Event planner Harriette Rose Katz, Michele Gerber Klein, Jenny Harris and jewelry designer Adria de Haume, who has just created her own equestrian line, all added one of the blue and brown bracelets BeKind Bracelets to their accessories for the evening.

Chris Robbins of Robbins Wolfe Eventeurs, Janice and Charles Cecil, Gillian Miniter, Mark Langrish, Collette, Matt Semino, Mary McKenzie, NY Social Diary’s Gail Karr and Tiffany and Martin Marks also came to show their support
