The Museum of Arts & Design (MAD) held its 2006 Visionaries! Awards gala benefit at Pier Sixty in New York City on November 15 and raised $1.5 million for exhibitions and programs.

Honorees were the philanthropist and entrepreneur Alfred Taubman; editor-in-chief Paige Rense; artist and designer Ron Arad; and ceramic artist Toshiko Takaezu. Their remarkable achievements have established new benchmarks of excellence and exemplify the forward momentum of the Museum.

Visionaries! annually celebrates exceptional, culturally engaged corporate executives and bestows lifetime achievement awards on extraordinary artists and designers who have advanced the fields of art, craft and design. The event is MAD’s most important annual fundraiser and helps underwrite exhibitions and educational programs. Event co-chairs were Jerome A. Chazen, chairman emeritus of the museum, and Barbara Tober, chairman of the MAD Board of Trustees.

Alfred Taubman, Corporate Honoree, one of the nation’s foremost real estate developers, is the father of the regional shopping center, served as chairman of the international auction house Sotheby’s for almost two decades. The major focus of his philanthropy is in art, health care and education. Among his arts activities, Taubman is a major benefactor and leader of The Detroit Institute of Arts, has served on the board of the Whitney Museum of American Art, recently funded a major expansion and renovation of the University of Michigan Art Museum, and is a founding member of the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of America Art.

Paige Rense, Lifetime Achievement Award, created the iconic Architectural Digest more than three decades ago, defining the genre of the shelter magazine.  As its editor-in-chief, Rense has turned AD into one of the most financially successful magazines in the world.  Her influence on the international architecture and interior design industries reflects that.

Ron Arad, Visionary!, a central figure in contemporary design, is one of the most influential and innovative designers and architects of our time. A self-taught sculptural furniture maker and designer, he works across the fields of art, architecture and design.

Toshiko Takaezu, Artist Lifetime Achievement Award, is an internationally renowned clay artist whose signature closed, vertical vessels have become her hallmark. She draws continual inspiration from the natural world, and eastern and western techniques and aesthetics.

Tony Ingrao and Randy Kemper opened their gallery for a private party to celebrate their 12-page feature spread in the December issue of House & Garden magazine. House & Garden’s editor-in-chief Dominique Browning and the interior design duo welcomed friends to get a peek at their fabulous East Hampton gardens that are featured in the issue.

Along with Ms. Brown,  House & Garden’s Cynthia Frank and Mayer Rus, led the guests in raising their glasses to toast Ingrao and Kemper and congratulate them on their exquisite gallery and garden.

It was pouring outside on this night although it was warm and dry in the pristine white marble space was accented by autumn floral arrangements --  bittersweet and rustic Chinese lantern blossoms. Albert Hadley arrived early and chatted with Alex Papachristidis, Nina Griscom, John Barman and Kelly Graham Mark Gilbertson, designer Anait Bian, Dr. Peter Theodorou, Alex Wraith and Mark Langrish.  Art expert Michel Witmer, Ella Krasner, Michele Gerber Klein, Rodolfo Valentin and his partner George Perez admired the designers’ extensive gardens that are filled with a remarkably beautiful collection of trees and of 17th century Dutch statues.  As the evening closed, miniature s’mores and chocolate cake squares were served.
