Grey and spritzy day in New York

March 11, 2009. Grey and spritzy day in New York with mild temperatures. Only ten days from spring, I spotted the slight flecks of yellow in impressionistic masses amidst the browns and greys and blacks of the bare trees and bushes and fences just inside and outside Carl Schurz Park. The forsythia leads the way with the first promises.

Last night at the Museum of the City of New York the Director’s Council held its annual Winter Ball.

This is one of the annual New York galas that gets better every year. The Director’s Council is a group who were once the Junior Group administered/presided over by Mark Gilbertson. Junior is not such good fit anymore because the kids have grown up and some of their kids are beginning to join the so-called Junior group. Some of them were even there last night.

More than 600 attended and they raised $450,000 to benefit the Museum of the City of New York. This longtime support of the Museum has not only helped the institution financially but it has developed a wider and stronger focus on it also.

This group is a good look at the developing and future social establishment of the city. It is not accidental. There exists a mutual interest in activity related to the city and its institutions. This fosters civic consciousness. Perhaps only a small number respond to that in a leadership way, but some of that number were in the rooms dining last night at the Museum.

Meanwhile the sponsors for the evening were LEVIEV Extraordinary Diamonds. And Versace. Leviev is a fairly new kid on the block although very famous in the world million dollar diamonds. Versace ... is Versace. The Ball had additional support from One and Only Ocean Club, Bahamas, Turks & Caicos Sporting Club, Ambergris Cay and La Grenouille and Swifty’s.

This event has a very long cocktail hour that runs a couple of hours although dinner is called for 8:30. No one minds. It’s a fashion parade, major people watching. There were a lot of women in Versace and wearing Leviev’s diamonds. After the dinner, menu by Abigail Kirsch, there was dancing with DJ David Chang, the same guy who had them boogeying over at the School of American Ballet Winter Ball at Lincoln Center till alal hours on Monday night. There was a contingent of the same crowd from Monday night – the 20 thru 40-somethings; they were all ready for David Chang by the time dessert was being served.

Director’s Council Chairs were: Mark Gilbertson, Phoebe Gubelmann, Cynthia Lufkin, Heather Mnuchin, Calvert Moore, Allison Rockefeller, Andrew Roosevelt, Burwell Schorr.
