Burberry's opening reception for Safe Horizon

Burberry’s largest accessories shop outside of their 57th Street flagship store is in Bloomingdale’s – where else? – and last Thursday they held their opening celebration with a benefit reception for Safe Horizon.

It was a rainy day but lots of the fashionistas and fashionuhbles showed up for the “London Mod” cocktail party. And to do a little shopping too, of course. Burberry scarves, hats and gloves. There was a goodie bag that some people would brave any weather for: the classic Burberry tote, filled with the new Burberry “Brit” fragrance, along with the Safe Horizon signature umbrella. Plus, proceeds from the sale of all Burberry accessories, Ready-to-Wear and coats went to Safe Horizon right through the following Sunday. That’s a big contribution.

About 300 showed up. That’s a big number even for New York. Among the crowd: Law and Order’s Stephanie March, Patty Hearst’s daughter Gillian Hearst-Shaw, along with her cousin Amanda Hearst (Ann’s daughter); Dr. Ruth, Muffie Potter Aston, Sydney Biddle Barrows, Brooke McMurray, Safe Horizon’s Board Chair; Cynthia and Dan Lufkin, Somers and Jonathan Farkas, Bob Tisch, Michele Gerber Klein, Dwight Johnson, Alice Judelson, Tina Louise, Bryan Bantry, Courtney Arnot, Etta Froio, Catherine Oxenberg and Barbara K. You don’t know who Barbara K is? You’re not alone but don’t worry, others do.

Safe Horizon has been in business for years now, doing wonderful things for a lot of us. They are the nation’s leading non-profit victim assistance, advocacy and violence prevention organization. They do all kinds of crucial things: provide support, prevent violence and promote justice for victims of crime and abuse. Everyday they run more than 80 programs in schools, courts, police precincts, domestic violence shelters, Child Advocacy Centers and 24-hour hotlines. Eighty programs!! More than 350,000 New Yorkers are recipients of Safe Horizon’s assistance and largesse.

We’ve all heard of Burberry’s for years but as many now know, it was the coming of Rosemarie Bravo that turned the name into flashing sign on the American consumer consciousness. The same can be said (by me at least) about Cynthia Lufkin and Safe Horizon in the world of New York charities. Before the pretty blonde Mrs. Lufkin married Mr. Lufkin, she was a public relations executive at Tiffany with its staff as sterling as its silver (under the direction of Fernanda Kellogg) and its events as high profile and polished. Cynthia Lufkin brought that touch to the Safe Horizon organization and they’ve raised our consciousness about their good and desperately necessary work.
