Warm wishes for the New Year
Some of the holiday cards we received
New Year's Eve, 2004. I’ve lived long enough that I’m used to years flying by and time being Only Yesterday. 2004 seemed to go so fast that it’s almost a blur in my consciousness at the moment of this writing. There was the campaign, the election, Iraq, the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean. What else? The Red Sox. And many many other things related to catastrophe now or in the future. Yet for us, who cover New York, and an aspect of life in New York, many things this past year were exciting, exhilarating, familiar.

We’re in a kind of holding pattern now. At least that’s what it seems like from this vantage point. A wait and see. Is it waiting for the other shoe to drop? Or just to see what’s next at this harried time in human history?

Many commented to me that it was a very quiet Christmas holiday in New York. Many who can and would, did get out of town. A cabdriver told me one night, while commenting on how slow business was, that he felt people were “holding off,” uncertain and therefore tentative, even cautious.

Nevertheless, life goes on. You can read in the tabloids about all the people who’ve gone to the Caribbean or the mountains of Colorado or Palm Beach and where everywhere it’s party party party. Here in New York it’s been a lovely week of grey cold weather, but lovely – really ... and on the great avenues of Madison and Fifth there have been big crowds of shoppers, visitors, and tourists, taking in the wonder of the city, the wonder that invigorates and juices the imagination for the whole world.

This year we received a lot of holiday cards
from people who shared images of themselves, their babies, their pets, their houses and their friends and staff. The message is the same, and a good one for all of us to soak up: We’re here. Life is Beautiful, somewhere, somehow, someone, right here, and may these feelings add more or something more to your life. And may it be beautiful. That was the message I got.

Many many thanks to all who’ve visited NYSD
in this past year, from DPC and JH, with the very best wishes for all of us, each and every one of us, in the New Year 2005!

A Message from New York designer Anand Jon about the catastrophic tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

Dear Friends,

Following the great crisis of the Tsunami devastation in Asia, I reach out to all of you to take immediate action and join Project AMBA. As some of you may know I went to high school in Chennai/Madras in Tamil Nadu South India, where the devastation is considered among the worst. I still have friends and extended family in desperate situations and such gruesome destruction that the news agencies cannot even broadcast. Geophysicists concur that current maps have become obsolete and even the actual rotation of our planet has shifted.

We have formed an effective alliance and network and started organizing a series of events starting in a few weeks to raise funds and collect donations and volunteers. A series of Shows, Amba Aid — a “live Aid” like record, concerts, celebrity hosts, auctions, fashion shows, T–shirts, events are all being organized and we could do one in your local region if we get enough activity and interest.

Including during New York Fashion week (week of Feb. 1st), Sundance, Oscars, L.A. Fashion Week, there will be a series of events in different parts of the country and I encourage each of you to join the core team by committing to Project AMBA which is non–profit with all proceeds going towards the relief funds — creating local chapters and helping these people over

150,000 deaths estimated already and much more if epidemics are not controlled ASAP. This affects all of us and could happen again ... Please email me back so I can confirm your participation and forward your contact info. I'll need your full name, city, and contact number and email address and we will have someone send you a formal press release on how you can take part in this venture of global proportions.

Please respond at your earliest to info@worldentmedia.com and cc me personally at aj@anandjon.com

We've had some amazing responses from celebrities, great names and organizations who've already jumped on board ... but it takes people of all walks of life to make this happen ... there is much to be done. Come join us at The AMBA PROJECT.

Sincerely,

Anand Jon
