Last night in New York

Last night at the American Museum of Natural History, they held their annual Founders Dinner with cocktails in the Theodore Roosevelt Rotunda, followed by dinner by dinner in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life where the great whale flies permanently above the guests.

President of the AMNH Ellen Futter and her daughter
The point of the dinner is to honor those who have helped shape the museum’s legendary history. This black tie gala included the unveiling of the museum’s new Founder Corridor – the hallway between the Alceley Hall of African Mammals and the Rotunda on the second floor.

The Corridor will feature the names of the original founders as well as those whose generous support has sustained the founders’ vision of an institution committed to furthering research and education.

Opening remarks were made by Theodore Roosevelt IV, great-great-grandson of the first Theodore, the 26th President of the United States. Lewis Bernard, chairman of the board of trustees gave a presentation of the museum’s history, and the museum’s president Ellen Futter talked about the museum’s future, as well as announcing the launch of a fund-raising program with a goal of raising $850,000,000 for an enormous program of development and building.

The museum is and has long been a mecca and a haven for millions
of children of all ages as well as those of us who’ve never lost the childhood curiosity and wonder about life. Its “founders” demonstrate an extra-special dedication because unlike its sister across the Park, the AMNH is about the natural universe that preceded the ego and the politics of the human condition. Any daytime (and especially the weekend) when its hallowed halls are rife with sounds of children’s voices of delight and enthusiasm and the patter of their energetic feet, is the affirmation of this timeless truth.
