Those
two running buddies, Brad Pitt and George Clooney, now
partnering with Rande Gerber on a Vegas casino and hotel are
now planning
to open a bar in Hollywood. Designed, naturally, by the architecturally
obsessed tyro, Mr. Pitt, the venture will serve as a pilot for
a string of bars Pitt and Clooney plan to build throughout the
world. That way wherever these two and their retinues roam, there
will be a watering hole at which they can gather and trade Hollywood
stories.
Calling
Brad an architectural beginner is actually giving him short shrift.
He has become an authority on the once ubiquitous
Gustav
Stickley-designed Craftsman-style houses that were once
available by mail order from Sears & Roebuck. Brad even co-authored
a book on the now classic style.
As for
the Pitt-Clooney bar plans: there will be food service and a source
who claims to know told us that the Naked Chef, Jamie
Oliver, will oversee the menu. The local site has not been finalized
as yet, but we’ve been told that one possible spot is the
space formerly occupied by the legendary Scandia, right here in
BevHills.
After catching sight of the recently married Jennifer Garner buying
several of her candles, we called Cornelia Guest at
Templeton, her family estate on Long Island, to give her the good
news. Cornelia’s
Travel Candle Collection for Slatkin and Co. is sold at Neiman
Marcus and that is where we saw Jen, shopping
with two girlfriends, with no Ben in sight anywhere.
(The new Mrs.
Affleck told us she
took a break from filming Catch and Release, a romantic
comedy, in Canada to spend time in BH with some gal pals from her
home
state of west Virginia, who we gather were here for Jen’s
baby shower. The trio said they had luncheon reservations at Spago.)
Another
fan of Cornelia Guest’s scented Travel Candles is Reese Witherspoon who
is said to favor the Old Westbury candle. A sales associate
at Neiman’s confided to us that the store is selling a lot
of the candles which bear place names in Cornelia’s busy
life, like Beverly Hills and Old Westbury.
Tobey Maguire and Jen Meyer celebrated
the Spider-Man’s 30th
birthday with a bash at the newly hip Hollywood landmark, the Roosevelt
Hotel, at its Tropicana Bar, where twenty or so friends gambled
the night away playing blackjack and enjoying a marble birthday
cake from Hansen’s bakery in Beverly Hills. The Tropicana
was designed by Dodd Mitchell who is also giving the rest of the
hotel a serious face lift. Dodd told us that he will be revamping
all the cabana rooms and the penthouse where Gable and Lombard
once frolicked.
Amanda Demme, the nightlife impresario, runs the
poolside Tropicana Bar. Next up for the hotel is the creation of
an exclusive VIP
enclave – Teddy’s – named in honor of Amanda’s
late husband, director Ted Demme, and the US president
from whom the hotel was named. Among the celebrants at Tobey’s
poolside party was the beautiful and busy Rachel McAdams,
with three projects to add to her resume — the current Owen
Wilson and Vince Vaughn comedy The
Wedding Crashers; the soon due
Wes Craven film
Red-Eye and down the line, The Family Stone with Diane
Keaton and
Sarah Jessica Parker.
Actually Tobey’s birthday celebration began earlier with
his and Jen’s escape to Sardinia with days and days of sunning,
swimming and sailing. Helping Tobey party hardy was Ashley
Olsen,
none the worse for wear following her breakup with Manhattan club
owner Scott Sartiano, thanks perhaps to the company
she’s
keeping – a hunky Jared Leto. Also there was Mary-Kate with
her boyfriend, Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos III.
She told us about vacationing in Capri on one of the Niarchos family’s
yachts. She said she spent a whole lot of euros on dresses and
tops from the Pucci boutique on Capri. The peripatetic twins then
high-tailed it to Hawaii, specifically Maui, extending their fun
in the sun even longer.
We reported a few columns ago that Jake Gyllenhaal and Kirsten
Dunst have rekindled their romance. We had occasion to
see just how much their relationship is heating up when we ran
into them
shopping at Yves Saint Laurent’s boutique in Beverly Hills.
Jake looked every inch the doting boyfriend as he waited patiently
outside the changing room while Kirsten tried on several outfits,
one of which was a white YSL suit that was very much like the one
that Bianca Jagger wore a few decades ago at her wedding to Mick
Jagger in Saint Tropez.
Someone snitched to one of the tabloid papers that Jake and Kirsten
are week-ending in Martha’s Vineyard, quoting Kirsten as
saying that she and Jake “are thrilled that they have holes
in their schedules that will let them get away from it all.” Kirsten
always talked about a romantic ceremony at the beach, so we wouldn’t
be surprised if they planned a secret summer ceremony.
If a wedding is in fact in the offing for the busy pair, they’ll
have to move quickly: Kirsten will be making dozens of appearances
promoting her fall release Elizabethtown. And then she’ll
be spending a grueling seven months on the next Spider-Man film
with Tobey Maguire, her last in the series, she says.
Jake will be busy as well, what with Zodiac on his work schedule.
At YSL Jake begged off talking about his and Kirsten’s revived
romance, although he did say that the dog they adopted together,
Atticus, named for Gregory Peck’s character
in To
Kill A Mockingbird, is “very happy to have Kirsten back
home.”
Some of those sharing cocktails and small talk at
the cocktail party for the Screen Actors Guild Foundation’s
Actors Resource Center at the Argyle Hotel were hosts Patrick McMullan,
Ryan Tasz,
and Hollywood’s cutest couple, Amy Lumet and Mike
Ryan. Also
the legendary Mickey Rooney, Frances Fisher, the Hilton
sisters and their boyfriends; and Casey
Johnson, Valerie Harper, Elliot Gould, Jackie Bisset and Tab
Hunter among others.
Tab has finished his autobiography, Tab Hunter Confidential;
The Making of a Movie Star, in which the one-time teen idol
writes about working with an impressive array of leading ladies – Sophia
Loren, Debbie Reynolds, Rita Hayworth, Gwen Verdon, Lana Turner,
Natalie Wood and Tallulah Bankhead. Tallulah? Yep. He appeared
with the Jasper, Alabama basso profundo Bankhead in New York in
a revival of Tennessee Williams’ The
Milk Train Doesn’t
Stop Here Anymore.
Liz Smith reported that Tab will also share details of his long
relationship with the late Anthony Perkins.
Also at the Argyle was Holly Woodlawn who
told us that Lion’s
Gate will be producing her biopic, A Low Life in High Heels in
association with Keira Chaplin’s Chaplin
Studio. That film’s
soundtrack sounds like a must-have: Mick Jagger, Lou Reed
and David Bowie singing the song that immortalized Holly
Woodlawn, A
Walk On the Wild Side. Holly was at the party with Asha
Puhtli, the Bombay songbird who’ll also contribute
a song to the soundtrack.
Asha was in town to tape ABC’s tribute
to her good friend, the late Ismail Merchant. Asha has appeared
in a number of Merchant-Ivory films including Savages, their first
American production.
Also at the party was former Paramount production executive John
Goldwyn who with his brother Tony, is planning a re-make of the
James Thurber classic, The Secret Life of
Walter Mitty, first brought
to the screen in a lavish Technicolor production in 1947 by their
grandfather, the legendary Samuel Goldwyn, starring Danny
Kaye and Virginia Mayo. At one time Steven
Spielberg was said to be
interested in bringing the Thurber story to the screen. Owen
Wilson will limn the part previously played to a fare-thee-well by Danny
Kaye. |
