Down at Michael’s Sandy Fisher uber-grand opera supporter was lunching with me to talk about the Met Opera Guild and the “Master Class” special benefit they’re doing at the Broadhurst Theatre on a Monday night in late June with stars and stars and stars alternating in the teacher’s role and Audra MacDonald coming into play the Student.

Sandy Fisher and Joe Torre |
|
As we were talking about the fascinating world of Opera and the Met, who should walk by but Joe Torre, manager of the New York Yankees. Sandy stopped everything, exclaiming (to me, not to him): “Joe Torre!!! I love the Yankees. I grew on the Grand Concourse and 165th Street just down the block from Yankee Stadium! I’d LOVE a picture of me and Joe Torre!”
I just happened to have my little Digital, and so when Mr. Torre came back by our table, I spoke up: “Mr. Torre, my friend here Mr. Fisher is a big fan of the Yankees and so I wonder if I could take a picture of you and him.”
Mr. Torre didn’t seem thrilled but he didn’t see annoyed either. “Sure, why not,” he says. So Sandy Fisher jumped up from the table, and so did I. The result, the lifelong fan and the Man.
The traffic in the city was horrendous after lunch. My cab driver was griping and groaning, “It’s this way all over the city today!” We took the shortcut through Central Park from 59th and Central Park South, wending our way pass the horses and carriages and runners and cyclists (and motorists) up to 72nd and Fifth Avenue where it was a wait just to get out of the Park. So I put down the window and set my little Digital to work to have a look at the beautiful pastoral/city scenes.
