Summer Rocks

Platinum, diamond and rock crystal bracelet from David Webb, price upon request, at David Webb, 789 Madison Avenue, between 66th/67th Streets, 212-421- 3030.

You don’t need a crystal ball to spot the extra shot of sparkle radiating from heads to toes this summer. For example, Valentino and Miu Miu covered stylish ballerinas with crystals, while Bulgari encrusted the arms of sunglasses with Swarovski crystal floral and cut-out designs, and Judith Leiber offers a crystal-coated lipstick case for those who need just a bit of gloss during the evening.

Chunky gold plated chain and yellow Lucite bib by Rita Moon for Fragments, $95.00, at Fragments.com.
But jewelry is delivering the hot rocks this season, be they Lucite, resin, cubic zirconia, quartz, diamonds, or the season’s big one – rock crystal. A chunky triple-strand rock crystal bib necklace, swinging drop earrings, a hunky ring; even a gleaming charm bracelet, are adding plenty of sunshine.

Being of a practical mind, or lazy as the case may be, I bought my polished clear quartz bead choker on an elastic cord, from the jeweler at my herbalist in Chinatown (who seems to match stones to every personality or body type in the neighborhood). Rock crystal is said to supply strength and energy, encourage clarity of mind, and improve perception and understanding. Imagine. All those benefits from a single atom of silicon and two of oxygen…plus, of course, years of heat and pressure.

It’s hard to resist the call of these crystalline gems at Verdura, Mish, Bergdorf’s, Saks, Barney’s, Magnificent Costume Jewels, Fragments, or David Webb. Let it shine!
