Brooklyn’s Seven House Gallery will host the transformative “Passion for Freedom” exhibition, marking the 15th anniversary of the globally recognized festival. From May 3rd to May 31st, 2024, the exhibition will highlight the relentless struggle against censorship through the provocative works of artists banned in their native lands. Founded in 2009 by Camilla Forest, the Passion for Freedom Festival has emerged as a vital platform for fearless artists facing oppression. With a history spanning across the UK, Poland, Denmark, and the United States, the festival has showcased over 600 artists from 60 countries, each exploring the intense relationship between art and freedom. “This festival was born from the need to support artists who dare to voice truths in societies where censorship reigns,” explained Agnieszka Kolek, the curator of the exhibition. “Artists are often the first to face suppression under authoritarian regimes. By highlighting their work, we not only challenge these oppressive narratives but also preserve the diverse tapestry of global cultures.” Highlighting this year’s exhibition are stirring pieces from Firoozeh Bazrafkan, an Iranian-Danish artist known for her feminist activism, and Talseem Muhall, a British-Yemeni artist whose work has sparked significant controversy and threats. Additionally, visitors can experience the poignant artworks of Gongsam Kim from North Korea, Daria Callie from Belarus, and Hu Chia from Taiwan, each representing a personal testament to the fight for creative freedom. The exhibition also pays tribute to artists like Marc Provisor and Richard Butchins, whose recent works respond to global conflicts and societal shifts. “Each year, we are curious to see who will react to our exhibition,” stated Camila Forest, founder of the festival. “The responses are a gauge of where freedom is most under threat.” Open: Wed-Sun 12PM-6PM, email marcjanna@passionforfreedom.art to make viewing by appointmentEvent Calendar
