Bloomingdale School of Music 2022/23 Faculty Concert Series, February-March

Bloomingdale School of Music continues its 2022/23 Faculty Concert Series at the David Greer Concert Hall, 323 West 108th Street, NYC. The upcoming season will feature rarely heard classical and jazz music for various instruments and voices performed by Bloomingdale’s outstanding faculty and guest artists. Concerts will be presented in Bloomingdale’s state-of-the-art concert hall and will spotlight music from around the world including Italy, Puerto Rico, Hungary, Russia, and our very own New York City. The series continues with Music Inspiring Music on Friday, November 18, 2022 at 7pm, presented both in-person and on livestream.

For over 20 years Bloomingdale has presented its faculty, as well as guest artists, in concerts including classical music, jazz, and world music. Bloomingdale’s Free Faculty Concert Series has established itself a vital part of the musical life of the Upper West Side, taking place most Fridays at 7pm in Bloomingdale’s David Greer Concert Hall. Internet Intermezzi II: Chamber Improv Rebooted
Friday, February 10, 2023 at 7pm

The events of the past two years have accelerated the development of remote collaboration technology. Zach Lapidus and Eli Asher will be joined by contemporary classical music specialist and improvisor Carrie Frey in a live concert bringing these innovations into the concert hall in an engaging set of interactive performances.


Computer-generated music notation will be generated live (with and without audience input), displayed on the projection screen, and interpreted by the performers.

“Grand and Humble Gestures”
This set will use graphic notation and shapes instead of conventional notation, and visuals and audio will be generated in real-time interaction with the players. They’ll all be outfitted with controllers that pick up their movements and translate them into sound and visuals.

“Sonic Gardeners”
Multiple speakers (and possibly computers) will be placed around the concert hall, transforming it into an immersive sonic environment. The trio will roam the hall, interacting with the electronic sound, which will in turn respond to the improvisers.

The Piano Music of Bartok

Judith Olson and her students perform solos and duets by 20th century Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, whose 400-plus works for piano include two landmark educational collections: For Children and Mikrokosmos. The centerpiece of the concert, Musiques nocturnes, is an impressionistic and magical evocation of a Hungarian landscape at night.

Masks are required for everyone when entering performance and event spaces in the BSM building.

About the Artists
Equally at home in a variety of styles from the traditional to the avant-garde, trumpeter Eli Asher’s longest musical relationships have been with the Bjorkestra (rebooted in September 2022 after a 7-year hiatus) and with the Respect Sextet, who the The New York Times called “ambitious music with a smart-alecky affect, ranging broadly from the antic to the deadpan”. He has also performed with Bang on a Can’s Asphalt Orchestra, Tilt Brass, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, The Gregory Brothers, Signal Ensemble, Slavic Soul Party!, and Jose Gonzalez, in venues ranging from the Blue Note in New York City, to the Montreal Jazz Festival, to the Teatro Manzoni in Milan. Recently he has been heard with the Eli Asher/Aaron Shragge Duo, Jump of This Bridge, Max Kutner’s Trio Generale and High Flavors Quintet, on Austrian radio ORF, and at the Jazzatlier Ulrichsberg (Austria) jazz festival. He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music (MM) and Princeton University (BA), where he studied composition with electronic music pioneer Paul Lansky.

A native of Vancouver, Washington, Zach Lapidus is a pianist, synthesist, composer, and teacher currently based in Brooklyn, NY. A graduate of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, Zach studied jazz piano under Luke Gillespie and David Baker, completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Studies in 2008. He was also awarded a fellowship at Ravinia’s Steans Institute for Young Artists, where he studied with James Moody and Rufus Reid. Most recently, he was named as one of five finalists for the American Pianists Association’s 2015 Jazz Fellowship Awards, and was selected as a finalist for their 2011 competition as well. Prior to living in New York City, Zach was based in Indianapolis, IN, where he was an in-demand sideman and studio musician throughout the midwest. Parallel to his career as a pianist, Zach has also worked as a keyboardist and in the realms of synthesis, audio programming, and sound design. First appearing with a recording credit for “SuperCollider” on Corey Christiansen’s 2013 record Lone Prairie, Zach has continued to provide custom-designed audio effects, generative soundscapes, and expertise with hardware synthesizers in the studio. Currently, Zach primarily works with Max/MSP and modular synthesizers, and appears with a hybrid setup on the forthcoming records of Jeff Miles and Sergei Avanesov. He has also taught workshops in the SuperCollider audio programming language at the Midwest Electro-Music Festival and has developed educational music software for the teaching of ear training, harmony, and improvisation.

Carrie Frey is a violist, teacher, improviser, and composer based in New York City. Frey is the violist of the Rhythm Method (“a group of individuals with distinct compositional voices and a collective vision for the future of the string quartet” – I Care If You Listen) and a founding member of string trio Chartreuse and string quartet Desdemona. She has performed with many of New York City’s notable new music groups, including Wet Ink Large Ensemble, AMOC, Talea Ensemble, and International Contemporary Ensemble. As an improviser, Frey is a member of Simone Baron’s genre-bending Arco Belo ensemble and records with electroacoustic trio Hierophant. Her compositions, described as “a moldering compost heap” (I Care if You Listen), have been performed by the Rhythm Method, Arco Belo, Adrianne Munden-Dixon, and Kallie Sugatski.

Cheryl Warfield is a New York City-based soprano who has performed internationally, on Broadway in Hal Prince’s Tony Award winning revival of “Showboat,” and in the extra chorus at the Metropolitan Opera for fifteen seasons. During the 2021-2022 season, Cheryl appeared in Terrance Blanchard’s “Fire Shut Up in My Bones” at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, having previously debuted at the famed opera house as Strawberry Woman in the Gershwins’ “Porgy and Bess.” Cheryl has also appeared at the Theater des Westens in Berlin, Germany, the Bregenz Festival in Austria, and with the Rome Festival Opera in Italy. A well-known interpreter of Verdi and Puccini, she has performed over a dozen lead roles in the standard Italian repertory including the title roles of Aïda and Tosca during her career. Cheryl is the founder and artistic director of Manhattan Opera Repertory Ensemble (MORE Opera), a New York City-based nonprofit vocal arts organization blazing a trail in culturally responsive musical programming and arts education and making opera accessible to underserved audiences. She creates and produces vocal programs on Black themes, including spirituals concert “Paul Robeson: A Celebration of Culture,” a one-woman show “Meet Dorothy Maynor,” about the founder of the Harlem School of the Arts, “Dynamic Divas,” a tribute series to African American operatic sopranos, and “Angelitos Negros” a program in Spanish and English about African American and Latino opera singers. Pianist Olga Gurevich’s career spans the disciplines of concert artist, chamber musician, accompanist, and pedagogue. Her performances have been broadcast by National Television in Azerbaijan, First TV Channel in Russia and RAI Tre in Italy, and her concert appearances include venues such as Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Symphony Space, the 92nd Street Y, Scuola Civica in Cagliari (Italy), Smyrna Opera Theatre in Delaware, Westport Concert Series in Connecticut, and many others. Ms. Gurevich is a winner of international competitions both in solo and piano four-hands divisions; these include the XIII Piano International competition in Salerno, and the Ragusa Ibla Foundation International Piano competition in Ragusa, both in Italy. Ms. Gurevich’s solo piano recordings of Chopin as a part of Musopen project are featured at musopen.org/music/performer/olga-gurevich. As a collaborator, she performs with numerous chamber ensembles, and since 2015 is pianist-in-residence with the Silver Bay String Quartet. The violin/piano Duo Floresta Olga is a part of, along with the violinist Claudia Shaer, appeared in concerts in Georgia, New Jersey and New York under the management of Reggie Bahl. Ms. Gurevich has worked with the Manhattan Symphonie, Richmond County Orchestra, New York Session Symphony orchestra, New Opera Company, and since 2010 is the principal accompanist for the Riverside Opera Company. Olga Gurevich studied in Moscow, Russia, finishing post-graduate at the Maimonides State Academy and earning her Master’s Degree at the Gnesin Academy, in Piano Performance, Piano Accompanying and Piano Pedagogy. As a pedagogue, she is on the faculty of the Virtuoso Suzuki Academy in Mineola, NY, and a faculty-member at the Bloomingdale School of Music and 92nd Street Y School of Music in NYC.

Karen Demsey has premiered numerous works nationally and internationally. She has performed as a soloist throughout China, and on concert tours of Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Croatia, Slovenia, and Turkey. Her solo album, “Recollections of the Inland Sea,” internationally distributed on Capstone Records, features music for flute and marimba. She is Co-Director of the Artists International Award-winning chamber group, UpTown Flutes, and is featured on their four albums including the most recent, Streaming Dreams. She is Professor Emerita of Music at William Paterson University of New Jersey.

Lisa Pike holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music (B.M.), The Juilliard School (M.M.) and SUNY Stony Brook (D.M.A.). She performs with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, NYC Ballet, ABT, Long Island Philharmonic, NY Pops, Radio City Music Hall Orchestra, Center for Contemporary Opera, Little Orchestra Society, Brooklyn Philharmonic, American Ballet Theater, North/South Consonance, New Jersey Symphony and original instrument groups American Classical Orchestra, Rebel, New York Collegium and Concert Royal. She was a featured performer at the 1999 International Horn Society Symposium. Her festival appearances include Spoleto USA/Italy (soloist), Connecticut Early Music Festival (soloist), Caramoor, Vermont Mozart Festival (soloist), Bard Festival and Yale at Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. Lisa is the solo horn on the Grammy Award-winning recording of Samuel Barber’s opera Antony and Cleopatra (New World Records) and served as solo horn on Orchestra New England’s Grammy nominated recording of The Orchestral Music of Charles Ives. She has recorded for RCA Victor, Koch International, Music Minus One, Musical Heritage, CBS and numerous television commercials and movie soundtracks. She has worked with popular artists Sir Elton John, Billy Joel, Andrea Bocelli, Brian Wilson, The Moody Blues, Tony Bennett, Rod Stewart, Mannheim Steamroller, Ray Charles, Patti Lupone, The Three Irish Tenors, and Chita Rivera. Lisa served as orchestra contractor and performer on Barry Manilow’s CD Two Nights Live. She toured extensively as principal horn with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company across Canada and the United States, Andrea Bocelli, the Canadian company of Phantom of the Opera to Alaska and Hawaii, also the Canada-wide tour of the Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and has appeared in over thirty Broadway shows in NYC. Currently she teaches at William Paterson University, Kean University, Teachers College Columbia University, Felician College, Bloomingdale School of Music and is a teaching artist/ consultant at the Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art & the Performing Arts and Frank Sinatra School of the Arts. Dr. Pike who possesses New York State certification for Music (k-12) also serves as a New York State adjudicator for the NYSSMA Music Festival.

Collaborative pianist Elizabeth Rodgers holds degrees from Manhattan School of Music. She is in demand as a recitalist with singers and instrumentalists, including the distinguished soprano Judith Raskin, and in chamber music, orchestral, choral, and operatic repertoire. She performs regularly with Downtown Music, Music Under Construction, American Chamber Opera, New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players, American Landmark Festivals, and Libero Canto. Teaching experience includes Manhattan School of Music, Bard and William Paterson. A strong advocate of performing the works of living composers, she has premiered music by Miriam Gideon, Marc-Antonio Consoli, Wendy Griffiths, Tom Addison, Carolyn Lord, Joelle Wallach, Robert Dennis, Justine Chen, and Melissa Shifflet. She has recorded with Opus 1, Grenadilla, CRI, Musical Heritage, New World, and Albany.
