The Times Square Alliance will bring new music directly to audiences while in-person events are still on pause through the first ever Songs for Our City, a virtual songwriting challenge commissioning new music from singer-songwriters in response to the current COVID-19 crisis. Twenty-seven artists will perform original songs about community, the Theater District, or their memories on Broadway in a series of seven live streamed concerts throughout the month of June, while audience members vote at home for their favorite performances. The concerts will also serve as a fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund, which provides urgent resources to those within the performing arts community. Performers include: Alice Ripley; Ethan Slater; Rob Rokicki; Leslie Becker; Sam Carner, Derek Gregor, and Selda Sahin; Jaime Cepero; Lauren Elder; Drew Gasparini; John Arthur Greene; F Michael Haynie; Marcus Paul James; Donnie Kehr; John Krause; Janet Krupin; Molly and the Memphis Thunder; Anthony Norman; Alexander Sage Oyen; Jennifer Sánchez; Max Sangerman; Heath Saunders; Dru Serkes; Starbird & the Phoenix; Will Taylor; Will Van Dyke & Jeff Talbott; Joel Waggoner; Mike Wartella; and Tim Young. All performers are past participants of the Broadway Buskers concert series, which showcases Broadway performers’ original music through free summer concerts in the Times Square pedestrian plazas. The series will be hosted by Broadway Buskers host & curator Ben Cameron. Audience members will decide which performer from each night to send to the final concert of the competition, which will coincide with Make Music New York on June 21, 2020. The finale will be judged by a panel of esteemed industry notables who will determine a winner in addition to the Audience Choice Winner.
