Renowned American photographer Eve Sonneman’s “Navigation With Dreams” opens Thursday, November 21, 2019 at Nohra Haime Gallery, 500 West 21st Street, instilling a powerful vibrancy in her new series. Using her signature style of pairing stills taken seconds apart, she skillfully captures the intrigue of everyday happenings among iconic locations around the world. From hip hop dancing in Coney Island to musical instruments in Cannes, Sonneman couples two images from a fleeting moment, revealing only the slightest change between them. The artist’s astute observations present a humanistic narrative to her work, making normally mundane moments fantastically special. Whether it’s a prequel to a laugh or the aftermath of exploding fireworks, the photographs dance with one another. Sonneman invites us to get lost in the rich backdrops of twinkling city lights, serene cloud-filled skies and dancers pulsating with energy. Each image is meticulously chosen to propel you to the next, revealing a masterful insight into a world otherwise missed. Eve Sonneman was born in Chicago. She has exhibited widely throughout the world and has received numerous grants. She participated in the 1977 Documenta and in the biennales of Venice, Paris, Strasbourg and Australia. Her work is represented in forty-three museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Centre George Pompidou, Paris, and the National Gallery of Australia, among others. She has published seven books, the most recent being “La Ville Écrite,” by Editions of Centre Pompidou, Paris. Sonneman currently lives and works in New York City.
