Non-Invasive Neuromodulation For Inattention In ADHD w/ Douglas Teixeira Leffa, MD, PhD
Tuesday, December 20, 2022 From 6:00 -8:00 PM Eastern
Two thousand years ago, an electric fish — placed over your head — might have eased a headache.
In recent decades, this throwback has made a high-tech comeback. In what is now called TDCS, or Transcranial Direct-Current Stimulation, a weak electrical charge can be directed — through a patient’s scalp — toward an outer brain region. There, it can alter sensation or emotion or behavior or cognition.
As before, it’s used in pain management; but TDCS has now been tried for a range of ailments. The latest: ADHD.
On December 20, we’ll learn of an at-home clinical trial lasting four weeks. One that was state-of-the-art: randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, and relatively large.
And one in which attention was boosted by an average of 22%. This compared to what was had through sham stimulation.
The takeaway? “Home-based TDCS could be a nonpharmacological alternative for patients with ADHD.”
On the 20th, we’ll also meet the trial’s principal investigator, psychiatrist Douglas Teixeira Leffa.
Dr. Leffa studied medicine and neuroscience at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil. That’s where the study was conducted.
Currently, he’s in the US, a psychiatry resident at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. His interests include ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease, neuromodulation, and personalized medicine.
