THE AMERICAN AUSTRIAN FOUNDATION’S CULTURAL EXCHANGE AWARD LUNCHEON Founded in 1918, the Cleveland Orchestra quickly grew into one of the most admired symphony orchestras in the world. Following in the footsteps of such luminaries as Lorin Maazel, George Szell, and Pierre Boulez, Austrian conductor Franz Welser-Möst became Cleveland’s Music Director in 2002 and this acclaimed partnership has been extended to 2027, making him the longest-serving director in the orchestra’s history. As a guest conductor, Welser-Möst enjoys a close relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and has twice conducted their famed New Year’s Concert and will again in 2023. On June 1, 2022, Maestro Welser-Möst will conduct the Cleveland Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York. On June 2, 2022, he and the orchestra will be honored at the American Austrian Foundation’s Cultural Exchange Program Lunch. Past honorees include Dame Julie Andrews, Anna Netrebko, Philippe de Montebello, Sabine Haag, and Max Hollein. AAF’s Young Curators Exchange Program, launched in 2017, provides fellowships for curators from the Metropolitan Museum to study at the Kunsthistorisches Museum and vice versa. This curatorial exchange has led to joint research projects and provided valuable expertise for certain exhibitions.
