The Leslie-Lohman Museum’s Project Space will celebrate the unveiling of “The Gurlz,” a body of works by photographer and artist James Smith on Friday, January 31st, 2020. The weekend-long exhibition will feature over 100 images of transgender icons, Including Pose actress Dominique Jackson. Photos include Orange is the New Black’s Laverne Cox, Amanda Lepore, Allanah Starr, Yasmine Petty, Portia LaBéija and Buck Angel – to name a few. The exciting and cutting-edge show highlights the fantasy, glamour, and sometimes harsh reality of trans life in the city and documents the transition of the trans community in New York City, London and Paris, from 2004 to today. Smith’s series of photos explore the triumphs and tragedies of trans individuals in both the underground world and mainstream society. Operated by the Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation, the Museum and Project Space collects, preserves and exhibits visual arts created by LGBTQ artists or art about LGBTQ themes, issues, and people.
