The Salvation Army of Palm Beach County celebrates its Centennial Anniversary with The Paradise Ball.

In 1922, Marjorie Merriweather Post purchased a parcel of land to build what would later be called Mar-a-Lago, in the same year The Salvation Army located its offices in West Palm Beach, Florida.
“Mar-a-Lago,” loosely translated from Spanish for “sea to lake,” but also, a clever take on the lady of the house’s first name, Marjorie. In 1927, Marjorie, and Mar-a-Lago may have been known for their grandiosity, both were hosts to great acts of generosity as well. After the stock market crash of October 1929 Marjorie became deeply concerned with the plight of those affected by the hardships, especially the multitude of hungry people. She put her jewels into a vault, cancelled the insurance, and with the money saved she provided funds for the Marjorie Post Hutton Free Food Station. It was operated by The Salvation Army in New York City. One newspaper described her as “Lady Bountiful” because of her gracious generosity to those less fortunate. For five years, 1930 to 1935, one thousand grateful women and children received nourishing hot meals in dignified surroundings. In Palm Beach County, The Salvation Army strives to help those in need with a multitude of programs and services, such as Anti-Human Trafficking, Christmas Giving, Crowns & Confidence, Emergency Disaster Services, Emergency Food Assistance, Men’s Programs, Pathway of Hope, Veteran’s Program, Women’s Programs, Youth Empowerment Programs and so much more. You can be an integral part of this event as a patron, sponsor or donor and join the legacy of “Doing The Most Good” for those in need.
