Friday, October 4, 2019. It rained most of yesterday and last night, and was chillier than we’ve seen it. Today we’re running some photos of guests at Mark Gilbertson’s annual Autumn cocktail reception that took place on Wednesday night. It had already begun to spritz then but it wasn’t enough to keep his guests from stepping out. Last night, it rained and even poured.
Today we are running over sixty photos by Cutty McGill, most with two or three guests in them, so it’s probably about a third of the guests. What was interesting to me about these was that I saw dozens of people I knew when I was actually in the room. In these I saw mainly people I never saw when I was there. It was that kind of party – big and clattery, and constantly moving, people coming and going. It was so big that no one dominated with their presence. Everyone was a star.
Our host loves doing this but is obsessive (maybe compulsive?) about every detail including whether or not you received your invitation; and whether or not you are attending. It isn’t unlike him even to make last minute calls to make sure you’re gonna be there. Whew!
Such attention could make you feel special, although if you know Mark – and many do – he’s just “obsessive” about the little things. The result is always the same – big crowd, lots of talkers, lots of listeners, strangers, old friends, new friends, even intergenerational, and a good bar. Or two. Starts at 6, runs to 8:30 and then some. You can see the results of the faces of the guests. They weren’t just smiling for the camera, they were enjoying themselves. Mark succeeded.
