New 42’s Annual Gala Honoring Times Square Alliance, Tom Harris, and Rennie Harris

On June 3, New 42 hosted their annual gala at the Plaza Hotel, honoring Times Square Alliance and its president, Tom Harris, as well as Rennie Harris, choreographer and founder of Rennie Harris Puremovement.

The gala’s theme, “Celebrating Times Square: Every Corner Tells a Story,” recognized the vital role that exposure to the performing arts for young people plays in the cultural and economic vibrancy of Times Square and New York City. The event raised a total of $1.3 million to support New 42’s artistic, arts education and community engagement programming.

The evening was hosted by Tony Award-winning actor Brian Stokes Mitchell and included welcome remarks from New 42 President and CEO Russell Granet and New 42 Board Chairman Fiona Howe Rudin. Special performances were given by the 2023-2024 National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States Salome Agbaroji, winner of Season 14 of The Voice Brynn Cartelli with the NYPD Band Vocalists, Ladies of Hip-Hop Dance Collective, and Broadway artists Aisha Jackson, Jacob Gutierrez and Nic Rouleau. Additionally, New 42 Board Member Isaac Mizrahi hosted the “Paddle Raise” fundraising portion of the evening which also supports New 42 and New Victory artistic, arts education and community engagement programs.

Former chairman of the New York City Planning Commission Carl Weisbrod and NYPD Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban presented the Marian Heiskell Award to Times Square Alliance and its president, Tom Harris for their exceptional dedication to keeping Times Square safe, clean and welcoming since the organization’s founding in 1992.

New 42 Artistic Director Mary Rose Lloyd presented the New Victory Arts Award to Rennie Harris for his contributions as a global hip-hop ambassador and a sought-after choreographer. Harris’s work has been performed on the New Victory stage more than any other artist in its 29-year history.
