Once again competitive and thunderous hooves will be heard as Polo Hamptons posts its dates for the summer season. On June 29th and July 6th, 500 guests will pass an afternoon sipping Rosé and Pimms, nibbling on delectable bites while enjoying a field side spectacle of the Sport of Kings. The first afternoon of festivities will be hosted by the bright and beautiful Christie Brinkley; supermodel, author, actress and artist. America’s Sweetheart wears multiple hats and modeled many ensembles in her illustrious “Illustrated” career.
But it is her entrepreneurial spirit that is in play at the polo match as Christie Brinkley’s Total Gym is sponsoring the event. Is there a better advertisement for health and fitness than the uptown girl herself?
In total, Christie graced the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue eight times, and consecutively in 1979, 1980 and 1981.
In 2017, Christie Brinkley was photographed with her daughters for the magazine.
For what to wear, try your summer best with a little (or long) dress, a small bag for your essentials, wedges or block heeled sandals for stomping the divots at half-time, and a hat and shades for sun protection. This has been my spring of destination weddings and I have been fascinated by the popularity of long and lovely. Love Shack Fancy is a brand featuring the flattering and romantic style that continues to be so popular. The brand suits women of all ages and shapes in the season’s feminine flowy frocks. Which dress do you fancy?!
Love these airy Cult Gaia Bags for summer.
And this trending Gondolier Hat from Eric Javits will keep you cool.
Most polo games are 6 chukkars or periods long, each lasting 7 minutes. Halftime is a festive occasion as spectators take to the field to “stomp the divots” or step on the turf, dislodged by the horses’ hooves. These wedges are ideal for stomping and also elongate your look.
Hilary is always up to the minute on the subject of Jeans, how to wear them, and how to pair them.
According to Hilary: “Be a spectacular spectator in white jeans, a feminine top and a statement chapeau! There are so many flattering styles to choose from when it comes to white jeans. My personal go to is the boot cut which elongates the legs. I do also like a cropped look … and these by Paige stand out with the embroidery at the cuff. A pretty floral top always looks fresh in the summer. But I often choose to wear white with my white jeans … which provides a canvas for statement jewelry and accessories like a fabulous Glamourpussnyc hat.
So show your personality at Polo; it’s not just about the ponies!”
Polo has been played in Hampton’s towns for decades, but it disappeared from public view when Bridgehampton polo closed a few years ago. Player and enthusiast Michael Borrico and Justin Mitchell brought it back as a spectator sport in 2017.
Justin explained, “The confluence of a social event and an exciting on-field match bring such energy and awareness to the game of polo. There was a void — fans missed it – and we decided to bring it back.” And they have succeeded in bringing back an elegant tradition in an area known for its luxurious lifestyle.
Primer for Polo: There are four players on each team and each player has a rating or handicap. Depending of the level of play — 8 goal, 12 goal, 22 goal, and so on — the collective handicap of the team cannot more that the stated level. In other words, in a 12 goal game, all four player’s handicaps cannot exceed 12. The highest rating a player can receive is a 10 so the highest level of play is 40 goal, when all of the players are “10’s.”
As a spectator, one important thing to know is that when a goal is scored the teams switch ends and go the other direction — not knowing this can make the game very confusing to watch! Otherside, the rules of the game are all about safety for the horses and the riders. When the ball is hit, the line (path) of the ball creates a “right of way” for the player following the line. If another player crosses the line, the whistle blows and a foul is called. Depending on the severity of the infraction, the team who has been fouled generally gets a free hit or penalty shot. When a player thinks he has been fouled he will put his mallet up in the air. It is not unusual to see players from both teams raising their mallets and to hear exclamations of disbelief at the call (often in Spanish). If a player is overly vociferous to the umpires it can also result in a penalty! In the end, the objective is to put the ball through the goalpost more times than your opponent.
